Putting together the perfect wedding guest outfit is an art form in and of itself. There are so many things to consider: venue, time of year, type of celebration, the list goes on. An important thing to remember is not to steal the spotlight from the wedding party. The idea is to step out in a guest look that seems effortless, but has been strategically styled to appear so. So how do you make sure you look the part, whatever the style of the nuptials? It is all about expressing your personal style within the parameters of the wedding’s dress code. Scroll down to read our ‘What to Wear to a Wedding’ guide, including wedding outfits for men and women, and some useful tips for all wedding guests to follow.
FALL WEDDINGS
Wondering what to wear if you’ve been invited to an autumnal wedding? Crisper weather conditions call for a different approach to dressing. Layering is key for men and women. Men should choose a medium-weight suit in a subtle pattern or darker color, and select a tie to match. A coat finishes the look, but be mindful of the style. Opt for something tailored and elegant, like a wool overcoat or trench. Women should trade summer’s soft pastels for jewel tones. Reach for a maxi dress or jumpsuit in a luxe texture like wool, silk or lace.
WINTER WEDDINGS
Winter weddings take place when temperatures are lowest, and they call for guests to wear something slightly warmer, and more practical, than they would otherwise. For formal occasions, a three-piece suit in a heavier fabric is your best option: the most classic colors to opt for are navy, gray, charcoal and dark blue. If you’re going to be spending time outside, wear a formal scarf for extra warmth. Female guests can use the opportunity of a winter wedding to make a statement. A standout suit is the ideal outfit option, paired with a sophisticated overcoat to keep warm.
SPRING WEDDINGS
The allure of a spring wedding is universal, but dressing for one can be a challenge. The key is to find a look that lends itself to all types of weather conditions. For women, a lightweight trench coat over a long-sleeved shift dress is an excellent option. For men, a mid-weight suit in navy, blue or gray is the perfect spring wedding attire. Spring is also the ideal time to experiment with print and color – male wedding guests may want to explore the option of a pastel-coloured suit, depending on the dress code, and florals are flattering on dresses and skirts alike.
SUMMER WEDDINGS
When the weather heats up, breathability takes precedence over style. Lightweight materials like linen or cotton are ideal for high summer, and merino wool or cotton blends work well in cooler temperatures. For men, it’s perfectly acceptable to forgo a tie during the summer months, rather opting for a casual look like a blazer and loose button-down shirt. Women, on the other hand, can ensure they look effortlessly cool in a maxi or midi length dress made from an airy fabric like silk or chiffon. Ceremonies on the beach call for more sensible footwear, so swap your formal dress shoes for sandals or sneakers.
MEN
Accessories are a great way to subtly express your personal style. While we would advise to keep your tie simple, a complementary pocket square can elevate the entire look. Find out how to fold your pocket square here. For shoes, keep it refined unless the occasion calls for a more practical option.
WOMEN
Less is more when it comes to wedding accessories for women. Bags should be small and sophisticated, so as not to overshadow the rest of your look. Shoes should be stylish and comfortable, especially if the wedding is an all-day affair. Nude or metallic-coloured heels are the most versatile, but if you want to make a statement in shoes that standout, opt for colored pair to match your look.
